« FESTUM
Nearly five years ago Soushi was physically and mentally assimilated into an alien race known as Festum. His consciousness became one with the hive mind that the species possessed and was not lost in the swarm. Rather, Soushi's mere mental capabilities were so strong that he was able to manipulate the Festum's abilities into creating a new physical form for himself. It took an extended period of time but as such, his body only looks human. Therefore he has acquired several of the abilities the Festum have displayed. One of which being that he was able to give his left eye the sight back after it had been rendered blind by a childhood accident.

« ASSIMILATION
One of those abilities is assimilation, a process that involves invading anythin on a molecular level to alter or change its state. Unlike his friend, Kazuki, his powers do not run along the line of being able to restore others outside of himself and his Fafner but in turning it to nothingness. When piloting Mark Nicht is possible for him to connect and use various weapons for his own manipulation.

« WURMSPHERE
Incredibly dense and powerful balls of energy with the capability of destroying almost everything, including Festum who create them and the mecha the humans pilot to combat them. While these are usually sphere-shaped as the name describes, Soushi has found a way to manipulate the shape and turn it into a discus that he can fling at the enemy that will slice anything it cuts. These projectiles are something he can direct while they're mid-flight so that they track his opponent. Soushi typically has no real intent to use this ability most of the time so Empath is likely to be safe from this destructive power.

« TELEPATHY/EMPATHY/CROSSING
The Festum share a neural link amongst each other that allow them to communicate across great distances. Among the Festum the connection is extremely strong so what one knows, all of them know. However, since Soushi is not completely Festum he has been severed from that neural network enough that they are not aware of his every move or the location of their hidden island. Yet he can still "hear" them. Not that they use anything a human would truly understand to "speak". It's more of a sensation, feeling or emotion that he can pick up on. Others like him have been shown with the ability to actually use this connection to communicate on some level such as shared dreams and even telepathy should he so choose. Which he typically doesn't due to the fact that he spent 2 and a half years trapped inside the hive mind of the Festum.

Along the same lines of the abilities given to him through his Festum physiology is what humans have developed known as Crossing. This was originally designed to link Fafner pilots to one mind who would then instruct them in battle but has since been altered to link all Fafner pilots together. While he was first being assimilated by the Festum, Soushi was still linked to Kazuki despite losing his physical body and even when Kazuki was not inside his Fafner. The Crossing allows pilots and coordinator to communicate verbally while also experiencing their emotions and physical pain.

As unlikely as he is to use it: neither his telepathy or empathy abilities won't be used without getting mun permission first.

« REBIRTH
At his canon point, Soushi was actually in the process of being reborn after his body had undergone the assimilation phenomenon. For human-shaped Festum like him this means that he would become a baby, who may remember his previous life but isn't exactly the same Soushi. This process of assimilation and rebirth will be impossible for him in Empath.

« MENTAL CONTROL
From the beginning, Soushi has shown that he's able to keep a tight grip on his own mind. Whether it be keeping it when he suffered through the loss of a pilot during a Crossing or even after being assimilated with the Festum. Most humans would lose themselves in the hive-mind control that is the Festum but not him. He actually managed to keep himself mentally intact for two and a half years while part of the Festum swarm, using it to his advantage to get them to recreate his body and even sending out a "distress beacon" to his allies during this time.

Soushi is not an individual who will allow himself to be overwhelmed by his or others emotions, especially during times where losing it would be fatal. While others may allow themselves to have such emotions and thoughts outside of battle, it's not in his nature to be so easily moved in his day-to-day life. Though no one is perfect - not even part-Festum humans.

« PAIN TOLERANCE
While Soushi had not been able to pilot a Fafner during his younger years thanks to the loss of his vision in one eye, he was the only one capable of running the Siegfreid System. During the early years of development, it was designed so that the one operating the system would be the only one to share the pain of each and every pilot through the Crossing. Every pain they felt became his, every death they experience was one he shared, every assimilation was something he alone knew about. The Crossing System was eventually changed so that all of the pilots could share each other's pain but he has developed a high pain tolerance over the years so that when he became a pilot himself, connecting and piloting his Mark Nicht was not overwhelming.

« PILOT
Recently Soushi became the pilot of the dreaded Mark Nicht, a Fafner that would assimilate anyone who dared to attempt it. When first inside the monster, he was bombarded by the mental and physical pain each person had felt as it tried to assimilate him. Mark Nicht is dangerous even without a pilot as it is self-aware and had not only consumed anyone who got close but also would attempt to join the Crossing with other Fafners and also would repair any damage done when the humans tried to destroy it. This specially created Fafner was designed to be the child of nothingness that the Festum embodied and is, in fact, part-Festum. Despite having never piloted a Fafner before Mark Nicht, Soushi never needed any of the training that other pilots did when first starting out.

« STRATEGIST
Being the operator to the Siegfreid System in the early days meant that Soushi had to have a good handle on tactical strategies. Not only was he instructing multiple pilots across multiple battlefields but he also handled many unmanned aspects of the battle pertaining to the Fafners and would act as a relay between the pilots and those on ground control. He could quickly change strategies according to what was happening on the battlefield no matter which side had pulled an unexpected maneuver. Soushi is capable and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the battle is won with as few losses as possible.

I understand now.

Even if it is the life that leads to pain,
I will choose to continue existing,
In order to meet you once again.
As long as you believe..
I will surely return someday to where you exist.
